Individual Therapy

Joe values a collaborative approach to therapy that encourages self-efficacy and personal choice. Joe does not believe in telling clients that they must change, or in telling them how they must change. Instead, he works together with clients to determine what they are experiencing, clarify what their personal goals are, and support them in determining how they can best meet their needs. Joe sees it as essential that he shares a clear understanding of his client's goals, as well as the method they will use to reach them.

Joe believes that individuals are the primary experts on themselves, and that increasing this self-expertise can guide healing. In therapy, Joe helps clients to make sense of who they are and what they are experiencing, to identify their existing strengths and internal resources, and to clarify — and at times, change — personal patterns that are either furthering or hindering wellbeing. Often taking a relationally- and process-oriented approach, Joe tends to draw from the experiential components of therapy, such as experiences within the therapeutic relationship, to facilitate insight and drive change.

Joe has particular experience and training in helping individuals navigate relationship challenges, loneliness, anxiety, depression, identity development, trauma/traumatic stress, and boys' & men's issues. Beyond these areas of specialty, Joe has helped individuals navigate a diverse array of issues, including shame, anger, suicidal ideation, academic/career difficulties, neurodevelopmental issues (e.g., ADHD, autism, learning disabilities), panic disorder, personality disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and more.

Joe received integrative doctoral training, meaning he was trained in the different ways that healing and change occurs, and was taught how to deliver different types of evidence-based treatments & approaches. While Joe primarily takes a psychodynamic and interpersonal approach to therapy, he gained knowledge, supervision, and instruction about a variety of approaches to therapy, including psychodynamic therapy, relational/interpersonal theory, cognitive-behavioral approaches (traditional CBT, ACT, DBT), and mindfulness-informed interventions. Joe has received post-graduate training in EFIT (Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy). He has also been trained in TF-CBT (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), a treatment for children/adolescents experiencing traumatic stress, and he is certified in STAIR (Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation), a treatment for adults experiencing traumatic stress.
